As of July 1, 2024 the population of the Republic of Kazakhstan was 20,159,707 people.
Notably, there is a significant predominance of women (51.2% of the total population) compared to men (48.8%).
Population Distribution by Type of Locality:
- Urban population: 12,630,546 people (62.7%)
- Rural population: 7,529,161 people (37.3%)
This data shows a steady trend toward urbanization, as evidenced by the predominance of the urban population.
Regional Differences
The highest proportion of the urban population was recorded in the following regions:
- Karaganda Region: 81.8%
- Ulytau: 79.3%
- Aktobe Region: 75.1%
On the other hand, the most rural regions remain Almaty (19.5%), Turkestan (25%), and Zhambyl (43.6%) regions. These data demonstrate significant regional differences in urbanization, which may reflect the economic and social characteristics of these areas.
Based on current demographic data, it is possible to predict a further increase in the proportion of the urban population in Kazakhstan. Urbanization will continue to stimulate infrastructure development, increase employment opportunities in cities, and require the adaptation of social policies to meet the needs of growing urban agglomerations.
With a view to reduce migration to cities it is expected that regions with a high proportion of the rural population will need additional measures to develop rural infrastructure and create conditions for improving the quality of life.
