Wage Surge: How Incomes Changed in Kazakhstan in Q2, 2024

In the second quarter of 2024, the Republic of Kazakhstan saw a significant increase in wages and an improvement in key employment indicators.

This report provides a detailed analysis of wage dynamics across regions and sectors and describes current trends in the labor market.

Significant Wage Growth

In Q2, 2024, the average monthly wage in Kazakhstan increased by 10.3% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 403,251 tenge. The median wage was 278,296 tenge. The minimum wage, set in January 2024, is 85,000 tenge.

Wages showed substantial growth: compared to the previous quarter, they increased by 5.5%, and the real wage index was 103.7%, indicating an increase in income adjusted for inflation.

Regional Leaders

Among the regions of Kazakhstan the highest wage growth was recorded in Almaty, where the average wage increased by 14.3%. In Aktobe region growth was 14.0%, in Pavlodar region — 12.9%, and in East Kazakhstan region — 11.6%.

The lowest growth was observed in the healthcare and social services sectors (5.6%) and in public administration and defense (5.2%).

Sectoral Differences

There are significant differences in wage levels across various sectors of the Kazakh economy. The most substantial growth was observed in the following sectors:

  • Financial and Insurance Activities: increased by 23.3%, with an average wage of 878,739 tenge.
  • Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation: growth of 21.5%.
  • Real Estate Operations: growth of 21.1%.

The highest wages were observed in the mining industry, where the average income was 797,618 tenge, which is twice the national average.

Vacancies and Employment

At the end of Q2, 2024, the number of open vacancies was 55,846, which is 1,578 fewer than in the previous quarter. The majority of vacancies were concentrated in industry (28.6%), public administration and defense (18.0%), and transportation and warehousing (11.3%).
