Global Inflation: From Record Lows to New Surges — Country-by-Country Overview!

The Euro Area’s annual inflation rose to 2% in October from 1.7% in September, exceeding forecasts of 1.9%. Food, alcohol, and tobacco prices rose by 2.9%, while non-energy industrial goods increased by 0.5%.

Indonesia’s annual inflation rate fell to 1.71% in October 2024, the lowest since October 2021 and within the central bank’s target range of 1.5% to 3.5%. Core inflation reached a 15-month high of 2.21%, up from 2.09% in September. The CPI rose by 0.08% month-on-month, marking the first monthly increase in six months after a 0.12% drop in September.

Australia’s CoreLogic Home Value Index rose by 0.3% month-on-month in October, the 21st consecutive month of rising property prices, though slower than September’s 0.4% gain. Homeowners and investors took advantage of higher prices, yet high costs in major cities like Sydney pushed many buyers out. Perth saw the highest price growth (1.4%), followed by Adelaide (1.1%), Hobart (0.8%), and Brisbane (0.7%). Meanwhile, declines were noted in Darwin (-1%), Canberra (-0.3%), Melbourne (-0.2%), and Sydney (-0.1%).

Australia’s producer price index increased by 0.9% quarter-on-quarter in Q3 2024, above forecasts of 0.7%. This marks the 17th consecutive period of producer inflation, with primary contributions from property operator output (1.9%) and residential construction (0.9%).

South Africa’s annual producer price inflation dropped to 1% in September 2024, the lowest since June 2020, down from 2.8% in the previous month. The drop was driven by price decreases for coke, petroleum, chemicals, rubber, and plastic products (-5%).

Portugal’s annual inflation rate rose to 2.3% in October, marking the second consecutive increase after hitting a low of 1.9% in August. Energy deflation eased to -0.2% from -3.5%, while unprocessed food prices rose to 2.1% from 0.9%. The CPI rose by 0.1% from September’s 1.3% jump.

Poland’s annual inflation rate accelerated to a 10-month high of 5% in October, up from 4.9%, marking the seventh consecutive month of rising consumer prices.

Austria’s inflation rate held steady at 1.8% in October. Services saw a 4.6% increase, while energy prices fell by over 11%, cutting the inflation rate by more than one percentage point. Food, tobacco, and alcohol prices rose by 3% month-on-month, above the general inflation rate, with other goods rising 0.8%.

France’s annual inflation edged up to 1.2% in October from 1.1% in September, above the forecast of 1.1%. Fresh food prices rose significantly (4.5%), while energy prices fell by 2%, easing from a 3.3% decline in the previous month. Tobacco costs remained high with an 8.7% increase.

Hungary’s annual producer inflation slowed to 0.9% in September, down from 3%, with slower price growth in mining.

The Netherlands’ inflation rate rose slightly to 3.6% in October from 3.5% in September. Industrial goods saw a faster price increase of 0.5%, while energy prices fell at a slower rate of -2.7%. Service prices eased to 5.4%, with food, beverages, and tobacco holding steady at 6%.
